On selecting BRAC for the award, Steven M Hilton, President and CEO of The Conrad N Hilton Foundation, said, "BRAC's approach to creating self-sufficient and sustainable programs on a massive scale has blazed a trail for development organizations around the world. Where most NGOs might tackle one dimension of poverty, BRAC delivers multi-faceted solutions to attack all aspects simultaneously."4

BRAC was founded by Fazle Hasan Abed (Abed) in 1972 in Bangladesh as the Bangladesh Rehabilitations Assistance Committee to rehabilitate the refugees of the Bangladesh liberation war.

He then directed his efforts at organizing the poor to help them develop their capacity and skills. With microfinance as its core focus, BRAC went on to form Village Organizations (VOs) with 30-40 members, and provided them with access to micro-credit to start income generating activities.

BRAC was also involved in other activities like delivering health services, providing primary education, building social awareness, and skills training. It adopted a wholesome approach toward microfinance.

BRAC developed an integrated set of services in order to strengthen the supply chain of the activities where the borrowers were involved.

These included providing services like training to the members of VOs, providing technical assistance and storage facilities to them, and helping them in marketing the finished goods...
